Abstract
Colin Williamson is an American journalist who has primarily lived in Japan since 1999, covering the Japanese game industry for English-language publications. From 1997–2005, Williamson photographed the events and press visits that he attended, as well as taking general photos of gaming culture in Japan. Williamson kept a collection of his digital photos, organized by event; these photographs were used by various magazines and websites where Williamson contributed, primarily IGN.
Custodial History
Colin Williamson donated his digital photographs to the Video Game History Foundation in 2025. A second donation, containing Williamson's physical photographs and negatives, was donated on Colin's behalf by his father Chet Williamson in March 2026.
Separated Materials
Colin Williamson's donation of physical photographs also included an unrelated collection of design documents for the game Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller; the game was adapted into a novel by Colin's father Chet Williamson. Colin's collection of film negatives also included staged photos of what appears to be Chet consulting with Colin on writing the book. These materials will be cataloged separately, and the design documents were physically separated from this collection.
