Abstract
Electronic Gaming Monthly (abbreviated EGM) was one of the longest-running American video game magazines. In addition to its extensive previews and reviews of video games, the magazine was often a source for insider news and rumors, which stood out among gaming magazines when it first debuted.
EGM was an expansive and prolific publication, with some issues running over 400 pages long during its prime. Due to the large amount of content covered by EGM, the magazine ran dozens of themed special issues and started a second-edition spinoff publication titled EGM² in 1994. The original publisher of EGM, Sendai Publishing, also branched out to produce several platform-specific magazines through the mid-1990s.
Sendai Publishing produced EGM from its founding in May 1989 until its takeover by media company Ziff Davis in June 1996. The magazine was discontinued in February 2009, shortly before the scheduled release of Issue 237. However, EGM founder Steve Harris briefly relaunched the magazine the following year, with the magazine's numbering scheme picking up with Issue 238.
