Scope and Contents

The library's physical collection of Electronic Gaming Monthly covers both print runs of EGM, 1989–2009 and 2010–2015. The final issue of the orignial run of EGM, Issue 237, was never published in print; instead, the collection includes the February 2009 issue of EGM Brasil, which was published the same month. Unless noted, all issues on the library shelves come with any inserts that were included for subscribers (such as Quartermann's Q-Letter).

In addition, this collection also includes the complete runs of Top Score and Electronic Game Player (two short-run magazines that predated EGM); and nearly all special issues of EGM, such as the magazine's annual buyer's guides.

Towards the end of EGM's second print run, regular issues were discontinued and replaced with a handful of special issues. These special issues have their own incomplete numbering scheme, which was only used for issues 4 and 5.

Abstract

Electronic Gaming Monthly (abbreviated EGM) was one of the longest-running continuous American video game magazines. Starting in May 1989, the magazine was originally published by Sendai Publishing, before publication was taken over by Ziff Davis starting in June 1996.

Although the magazine was discontinued in February 2009, it was briefly revived by founder Steve Harris in 2010. The EGM brand name continues today as a web publication.

Prior to Electronic Gaming Monthly, Steve Harris was also the founder and editor of two precursor magazines: Top Score, an arcade magazine, and Electronic Game Player, a magazine similar in content to EGM.

Historical Note

Sendai Publishing produced several platform-specific spinoffs of Electronic Gaming Monthly, as well as a magazine for video game retailers, Electronic Gaming Retail News.
