Scope and Contents

This set of photos includes 15 photographic prints, along with 16 photo negatives, from Colin Williamson's trip to Dallas. The negatives mainly come from Williamson's visit to id Software.

Film negatives were only digitized when they were higher quality than their corresponding photo prints. Negative scans have been labeled "negative" to distinguish them; unless stated otherwise, all other pictures in this collection are photo prints.

This collection of photographs included some miscellaneous or unrelated photos, some of which may have been taken by accident. These pictures were omitted from the digital gallery.

Conditions Governing Access

Some photographs with limited research value were omitted from the library's digital collection but retained physically. These may be digitized or shared with researchers on request at the discretion of the Video Game History Foundation library staff.

Note on Date

A stamp on the back of these photos indicates they were developed in August 1997. Additionally, an issue of the magazines Computer & Net Player dated May 1997 appears in one photograph (04 - id Software meeting room.jpg). Based on these two pieces of information, these photos were most likely taken at some point in Summer 1997, likely late July or early August.

Historical Note

Colin Williamson was a contributing editor for PC Gamer at the time these photographs were taken. Although PC Gamer covered id Software and Ion Storm frequently during the period when these photos were taken, we could not identify a specific article where they were used or where Williamson wrote about the companies during this time frame.

The photos taken at id Software show several computer game awards on display on desks and shelves around the office. We could not identify these awards at the time of cataloging.

Abstract

These photographs were taken during a visit to the headquarters of id Software and Ion Storm, two closely linked development studios located in the Dallas, Texas area. These photos predate Williamson's relocation to Japan in 1999.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

These photos were originally shot on Kodak Gold 400 35mm film stock.

Physical Description

Some photo negatives in this set had received wear from storage or had accumulated dust and debris that could not be immediately cleaned at the time of digitization (see "06 - Dallas, negative.jpg"). The negatives were rehoused in archival storage sleeves after processing.
