Historical Note

This library's physical collection has three copies of this issue of Next Generation. Two of these copies have a variant cover showing a mockup of a golden "Zelda 64" cartridge. Reportedly, these variants were reportedly distributed at E3 1998. One copy also has a promotional wrapper for Imagine Games Network (IGN), consistent with the style of special issues distributed at trade shows.

According to Next Generation editor Tom Russo, the popularity of this cover at E3 1998 allegedly put pressure on Nintendo of America to release a golden edition of the game, which they later announced as a limited Collector's Edition.
