Biographical / Historical
MAGFest is identified on this flyer as the Mid Atlantic Gamers Festival. By the time the event was held in September 2002, it was named the Mid-Atlantic Gaming Festival.
MAGFest was originally planned as Omakecon, an anime convention with a video game focus. According to a presentation by MAGFest founder Joseph Yamine at MAGFest X in 2012, the event rebranded shortly before Otakon 2001. Likely because of the short turnaround, this flyer from Otakon 2001 still uses the URL for that previous iteration of the event, www.omakecon.com.
In emails to the Video Game History Foundation, Yamine recalled that MAGFest did not have a booth at Otakon 2001, but that he put out "a stack of flyers" at the event. Although Yamine said that Omakecon had been promoted at earlier community events in the Virginia area, such as Anime Mid-Atlantic and the sci-fi convention ShivaCon, this marks the first time that the event was promoted under the name MAGFest.
